The Junior Lightning used quick transition and clean breakouts to create consistent offensive zone opportunities. Aggressive forechecking by the Bolts helped sustain Durham’s offensive pressure and puck possession throughout the game.
Whitby opened the scoring at 4:20 of the first period. Durham responded less than 2 minutes later with a deflection by Lauren Kader #11 off a pass from the corner to the net’s front by Michela Lio #71. Just 54 seconds later, The Bolts took the lead 2-1 when Lauren Kader #11 drove the net and shot off the goalie’s pads. The rebound found the stick of Alyson Hush #67, who fired the puck into the open blocker side of the net.
Whitby tied the game in the 2nd, but it would be The Bolts who would prevail. The Bolt’s winning goal came with 10 seconds left in the game. The Bolts gained control of the offensive zone, set up and controlled the play. It was then Lauren Kader #11 who skated in from the blueline, releasing a backhand toward the glove side with Georgia Sambrano #88 providing the screen. Sambrano then buried the rebound with a backhand over the goalie’s pad for the game-winner.
